Traditional Musical Instruments from Thailand

1. Khim

Khim stringed instrument

The khim is a traditional Thai string instrument with a mellow tone. It is typically played by plucking the strings with your fingers. Generally made from wood and metal, the khim has 15 to 21 strings, similar to a zither. It is often used in Piphat ensembles, accompanying royal and folk music.

2. Ranat

The Ranat is a type of xylophone that plays an essential role in Thai ensembles. It is made of wooden bars and played with mallets. There are many different types, such as the Ranat Ek (a higher-pitched variation) and the Ranat Thum (a lower-pitched instrument).

3. Pi

The Pi is a traditional Thai woodwind instrument similar to the oboe. Made from bamboo or wood, it has a sharp tone that stands out in ensembles. The pi is often used in Piphat orchestras, traditional Thai dramas, and dance performances.

4. Chakhe

5. Gong

6. Khlui

7. Sang

The Sang is a type of bamboo percussion instrument made from bamboo tubes struck to produce rhythmic sounds. It is typically found in ceremonial music and festivals. The instrument's full name is the Saenghwang, and it is popular throughout traditional Thai music.

8. Tongue Drum

9. Ching

10. Pee Nong

The Pee Nong is a traditional Thai double-reed instrument similar to a small oboe. It is made from bamboo and produces a sharp, piercing sound. Pee Nong is often used in ensembles, where it adds depth and character to the music, particularly in court performances and other ceremonial occasions.
