From discovering the sound of a kalimba to keeping a steady beat, musicians can now explore, tune and practise with free tools from Carved Culture. Our browser-based Virtual Instruments collection, instrument tuner and metronome bring three practical ways to make music together in one place.
From Hearing an Instrument to Playing It
Instrument guides and sound demonstrations can show you what an instrument does. We wanted to make the next step easier: letting people try the sounds themselves. Our virtual instruments invite exploration without needing to buy an instrument first, while the tuner and metronome support the essential skills of pitch and timing. Together, they give learners, teachers and curious musicians a useful starting point, directly in a browser.
Explore Our Virtual Instruments
Our virtual instruments use recordings of real instruments to make musical exploration more accessible. The melodic collection includes a 25-key piano, 17-note kalimba, bamboo panpipes and glockenspiel, letting you explore pitches and simple melodies; the piano also offers octave, sustain and note-label controls. The percussion and sound-effect collection includes djembe drum, tambourine, musical spoons, jaw harp, bird whistle and rainstick, with contrasting strokes, rhythms and distinctive sounds to experiment with.

Tune Your Instrument Online
Launched in August 2026, our browser-based instrument tuner helps players check pitch when practising. It includes options for guitar, ukulele and kalimba, alongside a chromatic mode for other instruments. A visual indication helps show when a note is in tune, with settings to adjust sensitivity.

Keep Time with Our Metronome
Our online metronome gives musicians a simple way to practise with a steady pulse. Set the tempo in beats per minute (BPM), start the beat and use it while practising scales, songs or rhythmic patterns. Whether you are learning your first instrument or refining your timing, regular practice with a metronome can help you develop greater consistency.

One Place to Explore, Learn and Practise
These tools connect Carved Culture’s music library: discover an instrument through a guide, hear its sound, try it online and develop your skills with lessons and books. Our aim is to make music easier to explore and practise, while free Carved Arcade games offer another way to learn through interactive challenges.
