How to Play the Vibraslap (Tutorial)

Also known as the jawbone or the chatterbox, the percussion instrument Guan Vibraslap creates its chattering sound effect by holding the metal frame in one hand and by lightly slapping the rounded block on the other end. This unique idiophone instrument is used in various musical genres ranging from rock and pop music, as well as being made use for cinematic masterpiece to create quirky and distinctive sound to evoke comedic or lighthearted moments.

Vibraslap Playing tips

To play the Vibraslap, hold the metal frame firmly with one hand so it remains steady. Using your other hand, gently strike the wooden ball block attached to the frame with a quick, controlled slap or tap.

This action sets off the internal metal teeth or pins inside the wooden resonator, producing the instrument’s characteristic rattling or “chattering” sound. Experiment with the force and speed of your slap to vary the intensity and texture of the sound. Because of its simplicity, the vibraslap is an excellent instrument for beginners and can easily add fun and interesting rhythmic accents to any musical piece.
